The Dutch settled New York in 1626 and this print shows the harbor and fort of New Amsterdam about 1673. Based on an early image known as the "Restitutio" view that often appeared in the borders of early maps, this 1702 version was published by Pieter Schenk in his "Hecatompolis" or "Book of Town Views" after the British had taken control and renamed the city.
