Picasso focused extensively on lithography between 1946 and 1949 in the workshop of Fernand Mourlot, whose expertise and efficiency in his craft contributed to the artist's energetic pursuit of the medium. His attraction to lithography's painterly aspect and its unique potential to explore the subtleties of black is exemplified in this composition made after Lucas Cranach's painting of the same subject (ca. 1530, Staatliche Museen, Berlin).
