Standing in an interior next to potted tree in bud, a man dressed in a coat takes the hands of a woman and waits for her answer. His garb and trunk indicates that he is about to leave on a journey, while the tree symbolize the couple's future relationship. Based on a painting exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts in 1877 (no.409), now in aprivate collection.
