Firescreen

Attributed to Herter Brothers American
ca. 1880
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 774
Although this small firescreen is unsigned, its sophisticated design suggests an attribution to Herter Brothers, New York's premier decorating firm of the 1880s. The cherry frame with Japanesque incised decoration and the overall simplicity of the form are characteristic of their productions.
