West Forty-Second Street, Night

Printer Frederick Thomas Reynolds American, born England
1922
Not on view
Arms presents a rare, unpopulated view of West Forty-Second Street at night. On the left, the darkened New York Public Library looms in the foreground; beyond it, the narrow Bush Tower (newly completed in 1918) rises above Bryant Park, ablaze with electric signs-or "spectaculars"-advertising Chesterfield Cigarettes: "They satisfy/ Right you are, They satisfy." On the right, the Times Tower (headquarters of the newspaper from 1905-15) soars above the old Sixth Avenue Elevated Railway (removed in 1938), and indicates the position of Times Square.
