The tonal potential of aquatint is evident in this politically inspired fan leaf, published in London in 1813 and intended for the Spanish market. It shows the 1808 arrest, at Aranjuez, of Manuel de Godoy, chief minister of Spain and lover of Queen Maria Louisa. His downfall soon resulted in the abdication of King Charles IV and the installation of Joseph Bonaparte on the throne. Before the Peninsular War, French publishers had supplied Spain with prints for fans, but the British entered the market when normal trade routes were disrupted.
