During the sixteenth century, the architectural treatise by Vitruvius was translated into various languages, catering to a growing international readership. A notable example is Rivius’s richly illustrated German edition, published in Gothic script. The text and illustrations in chapter 2 of book 10 are dedicated to hoisting mechanisms like windlasses, pulleys, wheels, and ropes that would have been used to lift heavy building materials for constructing temples and public structures. In the foreground of the image, we see scattered instruments of the architectural trade used for hewing, hammering, and chopping.
