A Farm Yard

Artist and publisher Engraved and published by Robert Havell Jr. American, born England
After William Havell British
1833
Not on view
Meticulously colored by hand, this print depicts two men in a barnyard filled with cows and pigs, a reflective pool of water, and distant hills above the thatched-roofed buildings. The palette conveys the effects of bright sunlight contrasted with deep shadows. William Havell was a self-taught landscape painter and founder member of the Old Water-Colour Society, at this time attempting to establish himself as a serious landscape painter in oils. His imagery likely responds to his native region, near Reading in England's Thames Valley. A younger relative made the print.
