The Chess Players

Possibly by Nicolaas Henneman Dutch
ca. 1845
Not on view
Claudet operated one of the earliest commercial photography studios in London. In 1841 he advertised the variety of poses people could assume before his lens: "Either engaged at tea, cards, chess, or in conversation." In this charming photograph, Claudet himself plays a game of chess. He sits opposite a top-hatted gentleman, who, pawn in hand, contemplates his next move.
