U.S. 90, En Route to Del Rio, Texas
This is the last photograph in Robert Frank’s The Americans (1958), and one of its loneliest. It is the only one in the book that includes his family. On the shoulder of an empty highway heading to Santa Fe, Frank peers into his own car and records through the front window his wife and children as well as the cold, desolate landscape that surrounds them all. It’s dusk, the automobile’s headlights are on, and the artist is in his preferred place: on the outside looking in.
