Untitled (President: 4)

1979
Not on view
Smoldering beneath the brim of a Lincolnian top hat, the model in this ad invokes a legacy of American commerce dating back to the founding fathers. This work belongs to Levine’s series of presidential silhouettes cut from magazine pages, in which stock images of women—all mothers and models—fill in the familiar faces of Lincoln, Washington, and Kennedy. The specter of commodification, here signified by the penny profile of Lincoln, lurks around the edges of Levine’s appropriated image.
