Covered Jewel Box
This exquisite jewel box, decorated with a matt glaze and gilded flowers, is an example of china painting whereby the porcelain body was obtained from a factory, and then decorated independently. The asymmetrical composition and use of open space is derived from Japanese sources. M. Louise McLaughlin was a leader in china painting and a founding member and President of the Cincinnati Pottery Club. For other examples of her work see: 1986.307.3, 1981.432.2, L.1989.14, L.1979.137.2, and L.1987.11.
