Giovanni Candida worked for a prolonged period at the court of Charles the Bold, serving the Burgundian duke as secretary, diplomat, and medalist. He probably produced this medal, which presents Charles like a Roman Emperor, in profile and wearing a laurel wreath to commemorate his siege of Neuss in 1474. The reverse shows the Golden Fleece, emblem of the Burgundian chivalric order of the same name, between two sparking flint stones and the order’s motto, "I have undertaken it, may it succeed."
