Couch

1851–56
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 774
This extraordinary couch derives its design from the sofa named for Madame Recamier and immortalized in her portrait by Jacques Louis David (1804, Louvre). The form was introduced to this country at the beginning of the nineteenth century, and here has been updated to suit the mid-century taste for Gothic Revival furniture. The maker is unidentified, but the couch matches four chairs that were among the original furnishings of Stanton Hall, Frederick Stanton's lavishly decorated antebellum mansion in Natchez, Mississippi. It is not known whether or not this couch was part of the Stanton Hall ensemble.
