Ladle
Hester Bateman inherited her husband’s silver workshop upon his death in 1760. Specializing in cutlery (especially spoons) for the growing middle-class market, she typically decorated her wares with simple, elegant motifs. Though it was not uncommon in the eighteenth century for widows of silversmiths to continue the family business, Bateman was exceptionally successful and remains one of the best known.
