Evening coat

Designer Charles James American
1947
Not on view
A complex mix of textures distinguishes this evening coat. James pieced the flat ribbed silk faille with its reverse, a glossy satin, to highlight his ingenious pattern cutting in this coat, with its origami-like folds at the high portrait collar and eccentrically constructed bishop sleeves. The contrast is especially pronounced at the back, where the slick-surfaced satin of the collar yoke and sleeves shines against the faintly dull sheen of the coat’s flaring body.
