Side Chair

Attributed to Robert Carter American
1793
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 774
This chair is believed to be one of a set of twelve originally made by the New York chairmaker Robert Carter for Peter Edmund Elmendorf of Albany. A bill of sale dated 28 August 1793 survives to document the sale of the chairs and their maker. Chairs of this pattern were ordered by George Washington from New York cabinetmaker Thomas Burling in 1790. These chairs are now owned by the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D. C. Eight of the original set of twelve chairs (six side and two armchairs) and the original invoice survive in the Glen-Sanders Collection at Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia.
