Bowl
On loan to The Met
This work of art is currently on loan to the museum. The snakeskin relief basket-weave design on this shallow bowl, together with the open blossoms, leaves, and branches applied to its ruffled rim, are characteristic features of The Faience Manufacturing Company’s imitation majolica. Under the creative leadership of ceramicist Edward Lycett, The Faience Manufacturing Company was known as one of the most versatile pottery manufacturing firms during the late nineteenth century in America. In addition to majolica, the firm produced an eclectic array of porcelain and fine white earthenware with ornament inspired by Japanese, Chinese, and Middle Eastern art and culture.
