Toque
The wearing of floral wreaths and hair ornaments dates back to ancient times and the use of flowers, both natural and artificial, on the hat was a natural development of the custom. In the second half of the 18th century, the production of artificial flowers had become a specialized trade, and by the beginning of the 20th century, there were over 2,000 companies in Paris, where the industry was centered. With its wreath-like grouping of blossoms on a bed of leaves, this stylish toque is made particularly appealing by the profusion of flowers and the subtle gradations of tones. Its relatively compact and tidy shape and low fit on the head are a response to the contemporary desire for increased utility in apparel without sacrificing beauty and femininity. Frederick Loeser & Co. was a Brooklyn based importer, retailer, and manufacturer of fine women's clothing and accessories, and the high level of taste and quality of its products is evident in the numerous garments preserved in the collection.
