The sitter (1753-1830) served in the Continental army until 1777. The artist recorded on October 26, 1776: "Rd. of Mr. Williams 28 Dolrs. For his Miniature," and later that day, "put a Glass on Mr. Williams Min: Miss Williams having broke the first for which I expect 10 s."
