Throughout his life, Sargent would record his family and companions in sketches and paintings. In this early study he rendered his mother's profile with few lines, in contrast with the more elaborate treatment of her ruffled skirt, wide sleeves, and ornate hat. This sheet comes from the Switzerland 1870 sketchbook (50.130.148).
