Capital

ca. 1897
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 774
One of a group of three, with 1980.154.1 and 1980.154.3, this capital comes from the Isidore Heller House, located at 5132 Woodlawn Avenue in Chicago, Illinois. Both the capitals, and the house from which they came, were designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in about 1897. The present capital, of painted plaster, comes from the third floor of the Heller House. Its design, which reflects the influence of Louis H. Sullivan, features intersecting circles that are an abstraction of the angel motif found in the frieze surrounding the third floor of the house.
