Chintz appliqued quilt
This quilt is formed of appliqued chintz blocks with brown and red printed calico sashing. The chintzes are of varying ages; the oldest, a flower basket in the largest block, is from approximately 1800, while the newest seems to be from the first half of the twentieth century. The base onto which the appliqués are stitched is of finely woven white cotton, and the backing is of cotton sateen. The sashing is sewn to the blocks by machine; the appliques are all hand sewn, and some are surrounded by either buttonhole or chain stitch. The piece is hand quilted in diagonal parallel lines.
