Frame
Stanford White designed numerous frames with overlapping grille ornament. A very successful style, the frame was often imitated, as were many of White's other designs. The degree of definition in the grille ornament is one way to determine if the frame was made during White's lifetime. This frame was probably not made under White's supervision. The tab suggests that the frame was probably selected for the artist Willard Metcalf by Albert Milch, a New York art dealer who also sold frames.
