Frame

ca. 1860–80
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 774
Rochester, New York, can be identified as the source of this unusual frame on the basis on comparison with other documented examples. The stylized floral pattern was burned into long lengths of wood with an embossing wheel. The wood was then cut to size, the corner pieces, which were machined separately, were inserted, and the gilded inner edge piece was set in place for a finished appearance. A frame like this would probably have been made for a painting of an interior scene or a still life.
