The Morning Paper

1868
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 774
This is one of several interior scenes that Weir painted in the studio of his father, Robert W. Weir. Once called "Portrait of the Artist's Father," this painting has since been reconsidered in the light of early criticism as a figure study of an old man in the studio of Weir's father. It was first exhibited at the National Academy of Design in New York in 1876, eight years after its execution. The original owner of the picture was Joseph A. Dean, a New York merchant friendly with the artist at the time.
