Self-portrait
Waldo painted this self-portrait around 1815, just before the start of his partnership with Jewett. He would constrict some of his stylistic force in portraits produced by the firm. His bravura and romanticism reflect the artist's exposure to contemporary English portraiture, especially the work of Sir Thomas Lawrence, or to the American Thomas Sully. On the back of the panel are three unfinished studies by the artist of a clenched fist, an extended arm with rolled sleeve, the hand grasping a pole, and a brush drawing of crossed knees.
