Mrs. Samuel L. Waldo
Deliverance Mapes (ca. 1797–1865) was the second wife of the artist and the mother of seven of his children. This unfinished picture presumably was painted around the time of their marriage in 1826. Waldo's working method is evident in the partially completed panel which the artist has scored to look like canvas, a technique begun in America by Gilbert Stuart. A second portrait of Waldo's wife, their son and a dog is dated around 1830 or 1831 and is in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
