Completed by 1882, this work was exhibited in 1882–83 at the Museum with the title "The Curfew Tolls the Knell of Parting Day," the opening line of Thomas Gray's "Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard." As is known from early photographs, the painting, now unrecognizable, depicted at the time it was acquired the rural scene of a hilly landscape, humble farm house, man working in the field, and a cow. The style of the work also seemed to emulate French Barbizon painting.
