The Fortune Teller
This is one of several variations that Newman painted on the theme of fortune telling or prophecy. He may have been influenced by a picture with a similar subject by his friend, William Morris Hunt, painted during the years when they were students in Paris. The depiction also includes another favorite theme of the artist, that of mother and child. Although this painting is impossible to date precisely, Newman painted at least two other versions of "The Fortune Teller," before and after this. This version was evidently executed sometime before 1894.
