Charles Henry Augustus Carter

ca. 1845
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 774
Charles Henry Augustus Carter (1819–1878), son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Carter, was born in France on March 25, 1819. About 1845, he married Elizabeth Perces Brooks (d. 1859) of Bernardston, Massachusetts. He was the Paris representative of Lord and Taylor, the New York department store. Carter spent his last years abroad and died in Paris on July 5, 1878. He is buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Brooklyn. This painting, which probably dates from 1845, may have been a companion piece to another portrait (his wife?) owned by Carter in 1847. A portrait of the sitter's father is 65.232.4.
