Robert Dickey
The sitter is identified as Robert Dickey (1777–1851), the son of Ann Thompson and John Dickey. Dickey immigrated to the United States from Northern Ireland. In 1807 he married Anne Browne (69.22.2) and they settled in New York, where he became a merchant. This portrait and its companion may have been made on the occasion of the couple’s marriage. Dickey, whose likeness is known from portraits by John Vanderlyn and miniaturist Edward Greene Malbone, appears here with Jarvis’s bold directness and loosely brushed surroundings. As the work is a relatively early one, the sitter's anatomy is somewhat awkward, but is counteracted by his intent gaze.
