Autumn Oaks

George Inness American
ca. 1878
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 761
Inness’s style underwent major shifts in the 1870s. The artist spent the early part of the decade painting in Italy, where he was in close contact with a group of artists centered around the American painter Elihu Vedder. Autumn Oaks indicates this departure from his early, crisply detailed style to a more expressive mode. In the later part of the decade, Inness began to write increasingly about the spiritual and scientific aims of his paintings, deeply influenced by the eighteenth-century philosophical writings of Emanuel Swedenborg.
