Italian Boy

1866 (?)
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 774
This picture was almost certainly executed in 1866, when Hunt was working in France. The influence of Hunt's mentor, Thomas Couture, is evident in his choice of subject and the handling. This is a study for the painting entitled "Italian Peasant Boy" in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Hunt also did a drawing of a similar subject (now in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston), which appears to date from the same European trip. Another similar painting, "Italian Peasant Boy II" (Museum of Fine Arts, Boston) is no longer believed to be by Hunt.
