Master Rees Goring Thomas
Originally acquired as a portrait by Thomas Gainsborough, reattribution of this painting to Ralph Earl was made in 1978 on the basis of the opinions of four different established scholars. Earl painted several portraits of young people during his stay in England from 1778 to 1785, including several in the manner of Gainsborough that bear strong stylistic similarities to this work. The sitter, Rees Goring Thomas (1769–1821) was a direct descendant of Edward III of England.
