In the Garden

1906
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 774
In the fall of 1905, the artist and his family returned to Florence from Dublin, New Hampshire, and took up residence in the Villa il Gioiello, which had been their home in Italy since 1903. In the spring of 1906, the artist finished this full-length figure study for which his wife Mary posed while holding their daughter Thea, later Mrs. T. Handasyd Cabot, Jr. (born 1903). They are accompanied by another daughter, Mary, later Mrs. Grenville Clark (born 1898). The artist repeated elements of the composition in later works.
